I also like the idea of the breathing pillow or blanket. I think it is good to think about what people really need. Yes, it might make life a little bit easier to have a robot who checks up on the simple practical things in life (though it could also be annoying). However, in our technologically developed world, I sometimes feel like people forget the importance of actual happiness that comes from the inside, from interaction with other people, etc. This project seemed to really give some thought to the fact that old people may be happier (and therefore also live somewhat longer) if they do not feel alone. This project tries to address this. Though of course a breathing pillow cannot replace a real human, however, I can imagine, that it is better than nothing. I think it is good to try to create technological things with this kind of stuff in mind.

I completely agree with you about the issue of the inserted microchip. It is not unrealistic that soon many governments in the world could propose these microchips as a kind of passport (as was mentioned in the text). As it is, 'improving' passports has been in discussion lately. For instance, (in Germany at least, i dont know about here) the government is pushing the idea of the iris-recognition thing. In the US you have to give a fingerprint to get a drivers-license, or if you enter the country as a tourist (foreigner). Even these things, which now seem normal to us, were once disputed and controversial. Step by step, we give more and more information about ourselves. Are we also always giving up more of our freedom? Imagine if we all did have inplanted microchips as passports. If this data fell into the wrong hands, it could be used in horrible ways; controlling are lives, and therefore inhbiting our freedom.

It was nice to see you, Janel, really liking this technology and feeing optimistic towards it. I also really liked "Teleporting an Unknown State" by Eduardo Kac. It was amazing to hear that many people came together as a community to nurture this seed, especially people who didn't necessarily know or interact with each other. I would've been skeptial of Kac's installation just as the curators were. There's no guarantee that strangers will take care of a plant collaboratively . But we can see that things that are out of the ordinary can happen and do happen. But this does not mean that each time people interact with Kac's design that the plant will be taken care of and will grow.
But I think that even if the plant failed to grow, it would still be a successful piece. The plant dying is not the artst's fault. If anybody's...it's the viewers fault, because they could not collaborate on how to take care of the seed. This will only show the artist a different way of presenting his work, not a failed way of presenting his work.

The article gave the sense that contemporary performances of this type focuses on the central theme of virtual vs. reality. While we had previously talked about blurring the line between the artist and the viewer in interactive pieces, we are now talking about blurring the line between two traditionally-distinct roles. It is interesting that progress is often made by blurring lines and recognizing that the world is a continuum.

>>What if a musician was playing notes just for the aurally pleasing sounds they made? Where is the feigning or pretending there?

It is interesting that you bring this up, Janel. I agree with you that Malone’s definition was oversimplified, but it got me thinking about how when I play the piano, I often think about how beautiful the instrument is. I take on the mentality that because I am the one playing the instrument, it is me sounding that beautiful—I am making that sound. The instrument gives me a way of doing something that I normally wouldn’t be able to do—take on a different “voice.” I don't know if that's pretending though....
